"INYANGE" - A Look at Rwanda's Post-Conflict Recovery 11th April 2007, 5:30-9pm. 5th Floor Conference Room, Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton
“INYANGE” (“DOVE”) is the title of rYico’s exhibition, which in Rwanda symbolises the innocent and pure.
A series of beautiful photographs taken by David Mowbray, show children born around the time of the genocide thirteen years ago who are now being supported rYico's programme.
Other photographs
depict rural women producing crafts in the Gahaya Links Co-operative.
The co-operative includes both survivors and the wives of men imprisoned
for their role in the genocide. This group represents
a symbol and a mechanism in Rwanda’s reconciliation process and
a structure for economic growth.
rYico market and sell crafts on behalf of the co-operative, enabling the women to rebuild their livelihoods, buy food and clothing, pay school fees, and even start saving. The purpose of the exhibition is to remember the victims of the 1994 genocide and also show how rYico works with communities in Rwanda.
rYico will also be showing ‘Through my Eyes’, a documentary film by Rwandan producer Eric Kabera. The film portrays the experiences of young people in Rwanda and how they are rebuilding their lives after the horrors of the past. It shows the strength of children and how music, art and other forms of expression play an important healing role in a post-conflict setting. The film includes some scenes that may be shocking for young children.
Everyone is welcome and coffee and tea will be provided. Contact Vivenie Niragira on 01273 234836 for further details.

Inside Rwanda - Igitaramo @ Komedia, Brighton 2nd May 2006
Returning
to the Brighton stage for a second year, Jean-Marie Muyango and
his highly acclaimed Rwandan dance group, Inganzo, performed
at Brighton Komedia on Tuesday 2nd May.
Formed in Brussels by artists of the Rwandan diaspora, the artists emerged
from the ashes of a country torn apart by the genocide of 1994.
Having preserved its time-honoured traditions and rhythms, the group has
reached outward across continents and generated a fresh wave of interest
in contemporary Rwandan culture throughout Europe and beyond.
Muyango collaborated with Rwema Minani an artist highly
respected for his contribution to Rwandan music and dance who has just
released his debut album Sur La Terre and and Jim Black who accompanied
Rwema on guitar. With stunning choreography and a living, musical narrative
from a largely unheard history, Igitaramo was an uplifting celebration
of dance, music art and song.
Karen Kessi-Williams, a Brighton based photographer,
also presented some of her work and talked about her trip to Rwanda 2
years ago when she was commissioned to document the country 10 years after
the genocide.
With thanks to Brighton and
Hove City Council, The Scarman
Trust and Union
Coffee Roasters.
An Evening of Reflection 7th April 2006
With exhibition by Karen Kessi-Williams and Film 'Keepers of Memory' by Eric Kabera
12
years after the Rwandan genocide, Rwanda’s reputation is still overshadowed
by the orchestrated genocide that took place in 1994. Falling on the United
Nations International Day of Reflection of the Genocide, rYico held an
evening of remembrance for the local community of Brighton & hove to reflect
on the lives of those affected by the atrocities of 1994.
The evening was well attended and was introduced by the Mayor of Brighton
and Hove. rYico were also honoured with the presence of the Rwandan Ambassador
to the UK, Clever Gatete.

to the day was enthusiastic and well received. Many thanks to Rosemary,
