Nell & Jasmine's art project at Centre Marembo September 2006

Jasmine Anthony and Nell Power, two Brighton based Sussex University graduates, will be travelling to Rwanda from September to December 2006 to carry out an art project with the young people at Centre Marembo.

"eyes of africa" An Exhibition of African Art and Theatre Evening 14th - 16th July 2006

Sponsored by Stagestruck, "eyes of africa" was a rare chance to view and buy a range of art that has come from, and is inspired by, Africa.

The exhibition was a great success and received a lot of support from the local community during the weekend.

"Very Well", a play by Joanna Bowen, was enjoyed on the Sunday evening to an audience of 100 people.

Upbeat Rock Concert! June 2006

Upbeat Music Courses offer children from 5 - 13 the chance to experience all the fun and excitement of singing, playing and recording popular music. A carefully structured programme taking into account each individual’s ability, ensures that all children reach their full potential and learn new skills while they’re having fun.

This year, Upbeat Music donated proceeds from their rock concert to rYico. Many thanks for the support of everyone that was involved!

During the course of the year, children have the opportunity to record CD singles and albums at the onsite studio and participate in a variety of performances including the yearly Rock Concert at Imperial College, Kensington



Lily's Half Marathon 4th June 2006

Well done to Lily, one of rYico's trustees, for running the Seaford Half Marathon on Sunday 4th June!

Lily successfully completed the tough course across the Sussex Downs in less than 2.5 hours and managed to raise £400 for rYico.

Inside Rwanda - Igitaramo 2nd May 2006

An evening of art, song, music and dance

Held at the Brighton Komedia on 2nd May, Inside Rwanda - Igitaramo, showcased some of Rwanda's finest musicians and dancers as well as the photographic work of Karen Kessi-Williams.

Jean-Marie Muyango, his singers Imitari, and his Rwandan dancers joined forces with Rwema Minani to create a wonderful performance of both traditional and contemporary music and dance. For photos of the evening, click here.

An Evening of Reflection 7th April 2006

With exhibition by Karen Kessi-Williams and Film 'Keepers of Memory' by Eric Kabera

12 years after the Rwandan genocide, Rwanda’s reputation is still overshadowed by the orchestrated genocide that took place in 1994. Falling on the United Nations International Day of Reflection of the Genocide, rYico held an evening of remembrance for the local community of Brighton & hove to reflect on the lives of those affected by the atrocities of 1994.

The evening was well attended and was introduced by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove. rYico were also honoured with the presence of the Rwandan Ambassador to the UK, Clever Gatete.


New UK office April 2006

rYico are happy to announce that the UK team have been offered an office in 'Community Base', a building in the centre of Brighton that houses the offices of many other non-governmental and voluntary sector organisations. The office will strengthen rYico's capacity to carry out its projects and will also enable volunteers to carry out essential work with the UK team.

Our new address from 1st April will be rYico, Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3XG, UK. Tel: 01273 234836.
